Keys to Successful Journey

Keys to Successful Journey

Sincerity

To thine own self be true," says Polonius in Hamlet.
Before embarking on any journey, there must come a moment of reflection.  Is this really what you want?  What is your personal philosophy, your overall mission, and does this journey align with those things? You must be always sincere with yourself. Take a good look in the mirror. Evaluate what you really want. Sincerity is the virtue of one who speaks and acts truly about his or her own feelings, thoughts, and desires. Weather you take on a new task, or start a new journey, sincerity is key. When it comes to your hair, making the decision to go natural, needs to be a sincere one. Is this natural hair your true desire? Is healthy hair your overall mission? Are you prepared to deal with the days your curls are out of control? If the answer is no, that’s ok. At the end of the day, it’s just hair. Both you and your hair will continue to grow, change, and evolve. Be Sincere with yourself when embarking on a new journey, take into account your lifestyle, and overall goals, and adjust either your goals, or your plan of action.

 Wisdom

Before starting any journey you need to acquire knowledge. Do your research.
Dig deep. Research tips, tricks, styles, and routines that led other, who are similar to you, to success.  Find  the best ingredients for you. Most learn by trial and error, so do not be afraid to try new, well researched things. Be aware of what you are embarking on. The 1 step before beginning a journey is to find out more about. The more you know, the better off you are. When you have the proper information, you can craft the best way  to reach your goals, no matter what they are. If you are thinking about trying a new method, do lots of research first, to see if it’s a good fit for you. Knowledge is power!

 Personal Integrity

" When Starting a new journey, hair, or otherwise, personal integrity will be your guide. The  consistency of  your actions, your values, methods,  principles, and expectations, will determine your outcome. "

Being consistent with your engagements, unwavering with your commitment, and having realistic expectations will lead to success no matter what goals you set. If a new method is yielding negative results, try another way, adjust your plan. Always listen to you, your hair, your body. Do what feels right. Your personal integrity is your guild while on any journey.

 Humility

Being humble; modest opinion.  Did you reach your goal? Getting so close you can almost see it? As you make your final lap, remain humble. Even as you make your victory lap,  don’t forget your modest TWA, or transitioning beginnings.  So often I see curly girls reach their hair goals, only to chop it all off and take the ride again. If someone approaches you to inquires about your show stopping hair, engage and encourage them.  A little empathy, and humility can go a long way in encouraging someone else who may be on the fence with their current hair goals, or journey.

 Courtesy

Be kind while on your journey. What works for you may not work for others, That’s ok. Reserve judgment. Listen. Agree to disagree. There are many naturals who project their feelings, and desires onto others.   If you find this happening to you, take a step back, and reflect. Remember, never let someone else’s opinions effect your truth. There is a wide spectrum of personalities within the natural hair community, so there may be some differences in philosophy.  Towards the middle of your healthy hair journey you may be able to offer support and advice to others who are looking to travel a similar route. Just be sure to remain considerate. Polite behavior.  A respectful, or a considerate act can go a long way for others, and you as well!
